Laser tattoo removal is a simple cosmetic procedure that allows unwanted tattoos to be removed through a series of laser treatments. Extremely short pulses of highly-focused light energy are directed at the tattoo ink in the skin. When the correct wavelength of light and sufficient fluence (energy) is used, the tattoo ink will rapidly heat up and break into smaller pieces. The body’s immune system will then remove these shattered particles and allow the tattoo to fade.
Motivations for laser tattoo removal vary from person to person, but many patients seek to remove name tattoos when relationships end, tattoos that reflect a different lifestyle or desire for expression that is currently not desired, and tattoos that change as the skin evolves with age or life events. Many seek tattoo removal to fade a tattoo so that a cover up tattoo can be applied as a replacement.
For most tattoos, three to ten sessions are needed to fade and remove a tattoo completely, with sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Variations in the number of sessions required are due mostly to factors specific to the tattoo (size, density, depth, type of ink, color of ink) although compromised immune systems and certain parts of the body make tattoo removal more challenging.
Laser treatments to remove tattoos have been used for several decades as an effective method. The most modern and advanced lasers are able to remove tattoos without scarring or long-term damage or disruption to skin. Side effects of treatment are minimal and well-tolerated.
